Description[edit | edit source]
The Epson Q203A is an AT compatible keyboard built in the late 1980's in the ANSI layout. It uses Type 2 Fujitsu Peerless switches which create a soft "ping" on both upward and downward strokes. It features so many similarities with Fujitsu's FKB-4700 Series Keyboards it could be considered a keyboard rebrand. The Q203A does set itself apart from the greater 4700 series in several ways. Most notably, it's case features a different aesthetic with a larger top bezel which lacks the distinctive horizonal mold lines of the 4700. The Q203's lock lights are not integrated, though, the barrel plate provides molds for integrated lock lights. Lastly, the coiled cable features an entirely different connector mold than other 4700 keyboards.
Unique Features[edit | edit source]
The Q203A's 180 degree DIN connector features a flip out tab, which increases the ease of use. The keyboards blue and brown dye sublimed legends create a subtle appearance.
Build Quality[edit | edit source]
The Q203A's case is held together with screws in the back and clips in the front. Much like the IBM Model M, It features a membrane matrix between the steel backplate and plastic barrel plate. Unlike the M, several discrete rubber dome molds are used on top of the membrane matrix. The barrel plate and back plate are screwed together, which makes full disassembly and servicing of the keyboard possible without any de-soldering or drilling.
Typing Experience[edit | edit source]
The barrel stabilizers used in the Q203A (and by other Fujitsu Peerless keyboards) cause extreme binding on larger keys when pressed off center. Lubrication can ease the binding, but milage may vary.
