The Apple Keyboard II, family number M0487, is a low-cost keyboard from Apple, supplied with the Macintosh Classic and Macintosh LC. ==Description== The Apple Keyboard II features two bidirectional ADB ports that function either as upstream (to connect to the computer or another ADB device higher up the chain) or downstream (for connecting the mouse or downstream peripherals). The cable is detachable and connects to either ADB port, with the mouse normally connected to the other port. Right-handed people would typically use the right-hand ADB port for the mouse, and left-handed people would use the port on the left; the other port is used for the keyboard cable. The caps lock key uses a latching action switch. The keycaps are pad printed, and have Apple's typical bottom-left legends with italic type. ==Variants== ===Mitsumi=== The Mitsumi variant uses sliders with conductive rubber feet, that make contact with a single-layer membrane. Above the plastic key plate, rubber cups are placed to provide the return spring function and tactility. The caps lock key uses a Mitsumi membrane lock switch. The example below has a manufacture date of 1991-05-24. <gallery widths=250 heights=187> File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi.jpg | Full keyboard with detachable coiled cable File:Mitsumi hybrid -- tactile -- switches.jpg | Mitsumi KPQ Type switches File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi opened.jpg | Keyboard opened up File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi membrane connector.jpg | Membrane connector File:Apple Keyboard II rear.jpg | Rear with label File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi layers.jpg | The base, rigid metal membrane backplate, and single membrane layer File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi membrane.jpg | Membrane sheet File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi metal backplate.jpg | Metal backplate File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi manufacturing details.jpg | Date of manufacture embossing File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi controller.jpg | Controller board and chip File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi controller board rear.jpg | Rear of the controller board File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi key system.jpg | Switches and keycaps; the latching switch under Caps Lock can be seen File:Apple Keyboard II Mitsumi key system rear.jpg | Rear of the switch system, showing the conductive feet on the sliders </gallery> Apple Keyboard II JP with ISO Enter and transformation keys are always the Mitsumi variant. <gallery widths=250 heights=187> File:Apple Keyboard II JP ISO Mitsumi.jpg | Full keyboard (JP ISO) File:Apple Keyboard II JP ISO Mitsumi switch.jpg | Mitsumi KPQ Type switches </gallery> ===SMK=== The SMK variant uses SMK spring over membrane, with Alps-mount sliders. The caps lock switch is SMK Alps mount lock. This single discrete switch is soldered to its own PCB and connected to the controller via flying leads. The guide plate appears to be produced flat and then folded into shape; with very little effort, the segments for each row of keys can be snapped off. <gallery widths=250 heights=187> File:Apple Keyboard II (SMK) -- caps lock, below.jpg | Caps lock, below File:Apple Keyboard II (SMK) -- caps lock, below, detail.jpg | Caps lock, below, detail File:Apple Keyboard II (SMK) -- caps lock assembly.jpg | Caps lock assembly File:Apple Keyboard II (SMK) -- guide plate segments.jpg | Guide plate segments can be easily separated </gallery> Apple Keyboard II JP with ANSI Enter and without transformation keys are always the SMK variant. <gallery widths=250 heights=187> File:Apple_Keyboard_II_JP_ANSI_SMK.jpg | Full keyboard (JP ANSI) File:Apple Keyboard II JP ANSI SMK switch.jpg | A SMK spring over membrane switch </gallery> ===White on Black=== Manufacturer unknown. <gallery widths=250 heights=187> File:M0487 Black Front.jpg | Front File:M0487 Black Back.jpg | Back File:M0487 Black Zoom-2.jpg | Front Zoom File:M0487 Black Zoom.jpg | Back Zoom </gallery> ==References== <references />
