'''40%''' is a term to describe very small, usually community-made keyboards. 40% keyboards typically have 45-50 keys.

The most notable characteristic of such keyboards is that they lack both the number row and the function row which allows for more desk space at the cost of requiring the use of often 2 or more [[Fn key|Fn keys]] or equivalents to enter some characters. 40% keyboard designs exhibit more variation and creativity than [[60%]] designs, as the latter tend to be based heavily on the basic [[ANSI]] and [[ISO]] [[Full-size|full-size keyboard]]. 

40% keyboards frequently are with [[Ergonomic keyboard#Split|split ergonomic]] or [[ortholinear]] layouts. 40% keyboards are often highly programmable with software such as [[QMK]], an open source keyboard [[firmware]].
