Topre is a Japanese engineering company that makes pressing parts, air conditioning equipment, computer parts and various other electronic and electro-mechanical devices. Topre is known among mechanical keyboard enthusiasts for its development of the Topre capacitive switch. This switch is found on many keyboards (mainly Japanese-made) including the Topre-made Realforce and the HHKB Professional made by PFU. Topre started making keyboards in 1983<ref>Internet Archive: Wayback Machine - Snapshot of zdnet.co.jp article on Topre keyboards</ref>
An illustration of the first ever Topre capacitive keyboard prototype can be seen on page 202 of Hyakkei PC (パソコン百景) monthly Vol.27, dated February, 2003<ref>Hyakkei PC monthly, Vol.27 excerpt - Realforce 106 article</ref>
