The layout of the professional carries on the tradition of the ANSI layout with the inverted trapezoid shape for the modifiers versus the alphanumeric keys. It was the first keyboard by PFU to be introduced with [[Topre|Topre switches]] (electrostatic capacitive non-contact technology<ref>PFU website - [http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/hhkeyboard/new030424.pdf HHKB Professional leaflet (Japanese only)]</ref>) as opposed to rubber dome over membrane which was a feature in [[Happy Hacking Keyboard|Happy Hacking Keyboard]] as well as [[HHKB Lite|Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite]].

In addition to the use of Topre switches, Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional uses a [[USB|USB connector]]<ref>PFU website - [http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/hhkeyboard/new030424.pdf Press release: Happy Hacking Professional (Japanese only)]</ref> which differs from [[PS/2|PS/2 connectivity]] on the Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite as well as the various connectivity that was offered on Happy Hacking Keyboard.
