Douglas Engelbart's patent for the computer mouse, US patent 3541541, suggested several types of electromechanical sensor; which one was selected by the version built by Bill English, does not seem to be known.
The sensors used in early mice are not well-documented. The 1984 Macintosh 128K mouse used the familiar opto-mechanical sensor.<ref name="128K" />
Even after this point, at least one mouse was made with electromechanical sensors.
