Linux, also known as GNU/Linux, is a family of POSIX-compliant computer operating systems that share the Linux kernel originally created by Finnish developer Linus Torvalds.

Name[edit | edit source]

The pronunciation of "Linux" is similar to "LEE-nooks", corresponding with the Finno-Swedish pronunciation of "Linus". The standard English approximation is "LIN-ux".

Changing keyboard layout[edit | edit source]

  • Most distributions use the X Window System for the default user interface.
  • howto: remapping keys on linux describes how to remap keys using at a low level using udev. An advantage of this method is that it allows rules that are keyboard-specific.
