GRiD Computer Systems Inc. was originally founded in Mountain View, CA and began in business launching an UK designed clamshell laptop computer known as the GRiD 1100 Compass in 1982. An unit is still on display today at the Design Museum in Kensington, London.

After launching a number of IBM PC compatible products, including the world's first battery powered Intel 386DX laptop in 1988, the company was purchased by Tandy Corporation in 1989 and later sold to AST Research, Inc in 1993. The same year GRiD Defence Systems is formed in London, England by former employees during a management buyout of the former GRiD Computer Systems UK Ltd.<ref>GRiD website — History</ref> Aiming at providing reliabile military computers that are supportable for over 10 years, they have since designed, developed and launched various computers and specialised hardware targeted at the industrial sector with clients including Airbus, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and Rolls-Royce.
