Newer [[Apple]] ''MacBook Pro'' models from late 2016 onwards have a ''Touch Bar'' instead of a [[Function keys|function key row]].
The bar is a colour OLED [[touch screen]], engineered to be watched at a 45° angle.

At least 63% of the middle of the bar is available for the current app.
At most 28% of the right of the bar can contain a set of permanent, supposedly configurable controls, such as for [[media key]]s.
Controls do not just include virtual buttons but also horizontal sliders.

The regular [[function keys]] pop up as touch keys when the [[Fn key]] is held down. They can also be configured to appear by default.

On the [[Apple butterfly mechanism|"butterfly"]] keyboards (2016-2019), the  [[Escape key|Esc key]] is a virtual key within the touchbar, which changes legend depending on the context. Legends have included "Esc", "Done", "Cancel" and a ''Close'' icon.<ref name="ars_2016mbp2"/>
On the [[Apple Magic Keyboard#MacBook|"Magic keyboard"]] (late 2019-), the Esc key has been reinstated as a physical key.<ref name="ifixit2019"/>
