All Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional keyboards come with DIP switches on the back of the keyboard along with detachable connector (to computer or host machine) unlike the Lite variants which feature non-detachable cable.

The layout of the professional carries on the tradition of the ANSI layout with the inverted trapezoid shape for the modifiers versus the alphanumeric keys. ==HHKB Professional JP Series==

The JP layout uses the layout that is known as JIS (short for Japan Industrial Standard). The layout does not follow what Dr. Wada had originally with the Pro series as in specifically to do with the inverted trapezoid layout. However one thing that shares the common similarities with Professional versus Professional JP is the lack of USB hub as featured on Professional 2 series.

JIS layout adds extra keys which are not normally found on the Professional/Professional 2 series. These keys are mainly specific for inputting Japanese characters such as henkan, muhenkan, kana, etc. Along with the Professional JP re-introduces the arrow keys that are not available as a dedicated key on the Professional/Professional 2 series. It also adds extra few keys that are not found on ANSI variant such as right Control key for instance.

The JP layout is available as a 69 keys variant as opposed to the 60 keys variant found on the ANSI variant. Only very few key caps are cross compatible (modifier-wise). The HHKB Professional JP was introduced on November 10, 2008 and is priced at ¥24,990 (Japanese Yen). At the time of the announcement the HHKB Professional JP keycap sets were also spontaneously released with the keyboard as an optional accessory.

The Professional JP Type-S follows the layout found on HHKB Professional JP however with the added silencing on the plunger/slider. Type-S also bears the insignia on the top right of the keyboard along with extra lettering on the model number.

The HG Series was introduced for a limited time to celebrate 10th anniversary of the Happy Hacking Keyboard series since the introduction in 1996. This series features a distinct machined aluminium frame made to order for the keyboard, a small wooden box containing the tools along with legs for adjusting the height of the keyboard (up to eight height levels as opposed to three), as well as laser engraving with owner's name on the back of the keyboard. In addition to all this, the HHKB Professional HG was also packaged in a distinct box that is very different from the rest of the boxes that were used in HHKB keyboards. The HG JAPAN features a wajima style lacquer resin on the (mostly) PBT keys to produce a distinct colour unique to Professional HG JAPAN along with gold dust sprinkled on top of each and every key. The Professional 2 series entails a USB hub added to the back of the keyboard for plug-and-play of various USB devices whilst retaining the same layout that Dr. Wada inspired. The USB ports for external USB devices are only offered 100mA and comply with USB2.0 as well as USB1.1 specifications.

The HHKB Professional 2 series was introduced on March 16, 2006 with the exception of Type-S which was introduced at a later date in conjunction with HHKB Professional JP Type-S.

==HHKB Professional BT==
The HHKB Professional BT uses Bluetooth 3.0, but can also be connected with USB (Micro-B port under a hatch).
It comes in classic printed, classic blank and JP layouts in white/grey and charcoal gray.
There are no sound-damped (Type-S) versions. The "JP" moniker has been dropped for Japanese layouts.

The case design has been updated with thinner case top, slightly rounder edges and modified slope of front and back sides. Two AA batteries are hosted in a cylindrical bump at the back. 
The logo on the JP versions has been moved from the front to the top, but keyboards with the classic layout has the logo below the right Shift as usual.
There is also an indicator LED for pairing and connection.

The keyboard now has a detachable USB Type C connector and a slightly updated case design, obviously based on the HHKB Professional BT, except that there is no battery bump and it has a Type C connector (without a covering hatch). There is no USB hub.
The logo has been moved to the top, and there is an indicator LED for Caps Lock. (instead of Bluetooth or battery status, because it has none of these)

Four variants with printed/blank legends in white/charcoal grey became available in 2019-12-10 for order on PFU Direct only.

Keyboards in the Professional HYBRID and Professional HYBRID Type-S (silenced) series support both Bluetooth and USB (hence the "hybrid" moniker).
The Bluetooth version is 4.2 LE (Bluetooth 3.0 in previous models), and the USB port is Type C.

Up to four Bluetooth hosts can be paired, with fast switching between them or USB.
In Bluetooth mode, the keyboard is powered by two standard AA batteries. Alkaline batteries are estimated to last three months.
When a USB cable is used the keyboard does not draw power from batteries, and it is not able to charge batteries either. There is no USB hub.

The case designs is similar to the HHKB Professional BT, but with a shorter battery bump and equipped with an exposed Type-C port.
The logo has been moved to the top on all model variants, and there is an bi-colour LED for connection and battery status.

The keyboard supports simple key remapping in a [[Microsoft Windows]] or macOS program when connected via a USB cable. The mappings are stored on the keyboard and can be used in Bluetooth mode.
Three different layouts can be stored by using combinations of the first two DIP switches (off-off, on-off and off-on). The remaining four DIP switches configure mostly the modifier/function keys and override these keys in any user-created layout.

Twelve models (Normal/Type-S, White/Charcoal grey, Printed/Blank/Japanese) were introduced on December 10, 2019. There is no "JP" moniker for keyboards with Japanese layout.

The charcoal gray variant is often confused as black (黒）{hiragana: くろ romaji: kuro} by unfamiliar people. Charcoal gray variants of the keyboard, like their white coloured counterparts both feature black dye-sublimated legends on the keys. Should the charcoal gray variant be actually black, the black dye-sublimated legends on the keys would be rendered invisible.

Unlike the Lite variants of HHKB series where it would clearly describe white and black clearly, the legends printed on those sets of keys are directly in contrast to each other. That is, white keycaps with black legends and black keycaps with white legends.
