A '''Delete''' key deletes a character next to the cursor.

On the PC, the Delete key erases forwards whereas "[[Backspace key|Backspace]]" erases backwards.

On many other platforms, the key named '''Delete''' erases backwards and there is often no forward-Delete key: See [[Backspace key]].<br />
If the Delete (Backwards) key is named ""Delete" and a Delete (Forward) key is present (such as on [[Macintosh]]), then the latter typically has a symbol instead of text.

Whichever key is named "Delete" is typically also used for deleting a selected entry, regardless of which direction in which it would erase text.
