Introduced by the [[IBM Enhanced Keyboard]], this became the standard US layout. Keyboards designed in the US took this form, while many keyboards marketed in the US by Asian companies used the Asian 101 layout.

Around 1995 Microsoft added three more keys to the keyboard, inserted between Ctrl and Alt: two [[Windows key]]s, on the left and right sides, and the [[Menu key]] on the right. The layout remains otherwise unchanged to this day, although many keyboards have made unconventional adaptations. One adaptation, used by the [[Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite]] and others, rearranges the 3×2 navigation block into 2×3.
